Apicoectomy (root-end surgery) in Fethiye
When a root canal has not settled the infection at the tip of the root, apicoectomy removes the inflamed tissue and a small part of the root end — so the tooth can be saved rather than extracted.
Apicoectomy is a surgical procedure used for teeth that have had root canal treatment but where the infection at the tip of the root has not resolved. The inflamed tissue at the root end, together with a small part of the root tip, is cleaned surgically — so the tooth can be saved rather than extracted.
At Europe Smile Center, this procedure is carried out by oral & maxillofacial surgery specialist Dr. Dt. Ozan Akıncı.
When is it needed?
- Root-end infection that has not cleared despite root canal treatment (cyst / granuloma)
- Cases where repeating the root canal is not possible or would not be enough
- Situations that require surgical cleaning at the root tip
How is the procedure done?
Under local anaesthesia, a small opening is made in the gum; the inflamed tissue at the root end and part of the root tip are cleaned, and if needed the root end is sealed with a suitable material. The area is then closed with sutures.
Is the procedure painful?
No. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia and you will not feel pain. You may feel only a slight sense of pressure, and the whole process is completed comfortably.
Frequently asked questions
Will an apicoectomy save my tooth?
The aim is to keep the tooth instead of extracting it. In suitable cases the success rate is high; suitability is confirmed at your examination.
How long does healing take?
The initial swelling and tenderness ease within a few days; the bone continues to heal gradually over time.
Will my tooth still need to be extracted afterwards?
Apicoectomy is intended to save the tooth; the outcome is assessed according to the condition of the tooth and the infection.
